About us

Rain is a privetly owned and operated netlabel. We make our releases available for free and legal download. We also allow it to be shared and used in any non-commercial way. The only thing we require is a proper credit to be given - to the artist and to Rain.
Therefore it is improper to distribute our music in any other way than the original release. This includes changing the file formats, encodings, bitrates, cover art and any information like names, durations and dates.

For specific details surrounding our license and what you may (and may not) do freely under it, please visit the Creative Commons site.

Our rules (as well as some answers)

Q: What are Rain's privacy policies?
A: We are strongly dedicated to the preservation of any private information we may and do obtain. And so all we get to know about the artists who release music in Rain is being kept confidential. We do however share homepage addresses. We also provide the means to contact the artist if one does not have a website and if we are explicitly asked for this. This depends on a specific situation and the artist may ask us not to do it.

Q: Why a netlabel?
A: Releasing music as free to download files serves many purposes. One of them is the possibility to easily share music created by unknown artists and to let them be heard with no costs and contracts involved.

Q: Why was rain030 removed?
A: We want Rain to be as artist friendly as possible. If the artist asks for the release removal and gives valid reasons for this we will do it.

Q: Why change the file format?
A: Well... We did start with mp3 and later switched to Ogg. The reasons behind this had more to do with philosophy than any real-life approach. We didn't want to stand in opposition to our listener's needs so we switched back.

Q: Why not release in lossless?
A: We feel there is no real need for this. There is also a possibility that some of the releases will have a chance to show up on cd with our or any third-party involvement. Thus we tend to save the lossless files for such occasions.

Q: Why ask for lossless submissions then?
A: There are two reasons for this. The first one is simply the will to have a solid backup archive of all the music which equally serves our and the artist's needs. The second one is our need for proper preparation of the releases. Whichever file format we choose to release in we like to encode it ourselves and the lossless source for encoding is the only one we can accept. Of course the lossless files we receive as submissions will not be shared further or used in any way other than stated here - unless a proper agreement was made with the artist.

Q: What about cover art?
A: Starting from the 37th release all the cover images will use a template. And so Rain will not be receiving any artist-made covers. Suggestions and photographs are always welcome.

Q: Why all the quotes from various books?
A: Ambience is not only sound. At least that's what we believe. And so we search for words which would reflect the music we release and share them with you.

Q: How to submit music to Rain?
A: Just follow these steps:
1. Get to know our releases and find out if your music fits in the Rain catalogue. We release mainly ambient music but are willing to accept almost every genre. It's the feelings and the atmosphere that matter to us.
2. Make sure your album is finished both musically and technically. We have no means of helping you master your tracks.
3. Read and agree to our CC license as well as our way of understanding it.
4. Prepare a zip file with all the tracks in lossless audio format (preferably FLAC) as well as some info about you and your project (the more the better).
5. Put it somewhere we can download it from. We suggest mediafire (no, this is not an ad).
6. Write to useirecords at gmail dot com and provide us with a link.
You can also send us a cd-r audio with your music on it (it must be burned using lossless files as a source). Just write to us and ask for a snail-mail address.

Q: What should the Rain artist know?
A: There are a few things we would like to state clearly:
1. We sometimes say 'no' after receiving a submission. This does not mean we consider the artist to be not worthy or his music to be inferior to some other. It's just that we know exactly what music we want to release and try not to make exceptions.
2. The probability of Rain releasing an album which lasts for less than 30 minutes is very low. Please have this in mind when submitting your music.
3. We are not interested in musical covers of any sort. If you are not the composer of your music please don't send it to us. The only exception we make is when you play music composed by musicians who are already dead and only if it doesn't bear any copyrights. You have to do more than just play it though.
4. Rain will not release an album which has already been released elsewhere. Also if after the Rain release an album shows up under a different label we will attempt to solve the problem with the artist or - if this does not help - remove the Rain release and not make any future ones of this particular artist. UPDATE: by 'release other than in Rain' we understand ANY release with different cover art, names, dates, file formats, encodings, bitrates. And yes, releasing music in Rain AND in bandcamp/soundcloud is a violation of our rules.
5. Rain is not responsible for any copyright issues connected with any of the releases. It is the artist's duty to make sure the music we release does not break the law. If such a situation occurs we will try to be on the artist's side and attempt to help solving the problem as peacefully as possible.
